Fresno State offense explodes in 13-4 rout of New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Fresno State softball team defeated New Mexico 13-4 in the series finale, scoring the No. 4 seed in the Mountain West Championship Tournament.

The Bulldogs (32-18, 12-9 MW) out-hit the Lobos 14-6 in the contest. Sophomore Kennedy Bunker went 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBIs. Junior Taryn Irigoyen went yard twice in the contest to go 2-for-3 with four RBIs.

Senior right-handed pitcher earned her 19th win of the season after pitching 5.1 innings with five strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Fresno State got its offense going in the top of the first inning. Juliana Wilson drew a two-out walk and Emma Martinez brought her home with an RBI-triple to right field. Kennedy Bunker gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead with an RBI-single up the middle.

The lead was extended in the top of the fourth inning as Bunker belted a leadoff home run over the right field wall. Lauren Almeida followed with a double to right field. Irigoyen smashed a two-run home run over the left field wall.

The Lobos plated two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, but the 'Dogs held a 5-2 lead.

The bats stayed hot in the next inning. Base hits from Keahilele Mattson and Emma Martinez put two runners on for the 'Dogs. Bunker doubled, bringing two runs in.

In the bottom of the sixth, two Bulldogs were hit by pitches to put two runners on base. Mattson brought in a run with a single to left field. Juliana Wilson blasted a three-run home run to give Fresno State an 11-2 lead.

New Mexico countered with two runs in the bottom of the frame.

Irigoyen plated the final two runs of the game with another home run over the center field wall.

The Bulldogs walked away with a 13-4 victory.
